Persistence

Boring people

June 24, 2024 by Andy Leave a Comment

Seek out the boring people. The ones who slug it out, doing the work. The people who bring big impact even in small spaces, who aren’t vying for credit, and who show up every day to do it over again even as they go unnoticed.

Boring people know how the sausage is made because they make it. They know what it feels like to do something well. It is their point of pride. They could take it apart and put it back together again.

Boring people are different than the people phoning it in. A boring person is doing a job most people ignore. The phoners are doing a job that everyone ignores.

The conditions for a boring person to excel are: the identification of a problem, the permission to fix it, and constrained resources.

When you stop and marvel at how something works, chances are a boring person figured it out. Not because they’re especially smart, talented, or wealthy, but because they had to even though it was hard. And because everyone else knew someone boring would do it if they just waited.

The lazy genius

May 30, 2024 by Andy

There are definitely geniuses. Da Vinci comes to mind. Socrates. Einstein. Mother Theresa. Helen Keller. People whose very existence has such an impact on the world that they’re remembered for centuries.

There are also people who are famous, powerful, rich, or some combination thereof. These people are highly regarded for their impact. Some people may call them genius now, but time is still testing the merit of that descriptor in many cases.

In either case, we are really celebrating persistence.

What it takes to be a genius is showing up, putting in the work, and doing it again tomorrow. Focusing on incremental change. Getting back to it after a stumble. Refocusing on the most important thing after a distraction.

Most of us are geniuses (who’s to say you aren’t?) – we just might have a persistence problem.

Music Lessons Podcast: #002 Active Listening with Gretchen Parlato

May 16, 2023 by Andy

Music Lessons is my podcast where we explore the analogous principles of music and growth by interviewing top musicians. In this episode, my guest is Gretchen Parlato:

Gretchen Parlato has been described as having a voice like honey, with a captivating style that fuses elements of jazz, Brazilian, and African rhythms, and a touch of pop and electronic influences that create a sound that is entirely her own. Personally, she is one of my favorite vocalists to listen to with her impeccable phrasing, emotive storytelling, and collaborative spirit. Parlato has become a visionary in the contemporary jazz scene. Her 2021 album Flor hit #1 on the iTunes Jazz chart and received a Grammy nomination, was #3 in the Jazzwise Critics Poll, #5 for best album from Jazzwise in 2021, and #5 on The Guardian’s Top 10 jazz albums for 2021. She has worked with some of the biggest names in jazz, like Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Esperanza Spalding, and many, many more. You can find all things about Gretchen at GretchenParlato.com.

Gretchen’s newest album Lean In, a collaboration with her long-time friend Lionel Loueke, comes out May 19th.

Find Gretchen Parlato & Lionel Loueke’s NEW album Lean In here (vinyl too), or listen on:

  • Apple Music
  • Spotify (linking to her artist page until the album releases)

In this episode, Gretchen and I talk about her background, where inspiration strikes and her way of getting her work into the world, and a great deep dive on musicology. Plus, we hear about her new album Lean In with long-time friend & collaborator Lionel Loueke.

Please enjoy!
